He is remembered as the second openly gay member of Congress in Brazil, and the first to be an openly gay rights activist. Comparisons have been made to Harvey Milk for his activism work and contributions to the LGBT community. In 2019, due to death threats, he gave up his seat in Congress. Since leaving Brazil he has been doing doctoral research on “fake news” at the University of Barcelona.
