Who is it? Leo Eric Varadkar is an Irish politician who has been making history since 2007, when he was elected to the Dáil Éireann as a TD for the Dublin West constituency. After serving as Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Minister for Health, and Minister for Social Protection, Varadkar was appointed Taoiseach in June 2017, making him the youngest person to hold the Office and the world’s fifth, openly gay head of government, and the first Taoiseach to be from an ethnic minority in Ireland. Varadkar comes from a multicultural background – his father was born in Bombay, India while his mother was born in Dungarvan, County Waterford. Varadkar has advocated for tax cuts, welfare reform, and investment in Ireland, as well as for LGBT rights and the decriminalisation of abortion. He is married to Matthew Barrett, a doctor at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
