Bettel is a member of the Democratic Party and heads a coalition with the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party and The Greens. Bettel is married to Gauthier Destenay, and the couple made history when same-sex marriage was introduced to Luxembourg in 2015. In 2021, Bettel contracted COVID-19 and spent time in hospital before recovering and resuming civil duties.
