Who is it? Sandra Birgitte Toksvig is a Danish-British writer, comedian, broadcaster, and political activist. Her career began at the age of 18 as the follow spot operator for the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. She attended Tormead School in Guildford and received a first-class degree in law, archaeology and anthropology from Girton College, Cambridge. In 1994, Toksvig revealed her identity as a lesbian, and in 2015 she co-founded the Women’s Equality Party. In 2016 she took over as host of the BBC television quiz show QI, and in 2017 as co-presenter of The Great British Bake Off. In 2020 she stepped down from the show and in 2021 presented Extraordinary Escapes with Sandi Toksvig on Channel 4. Toksvig is also a patron of Humanists UK and was chancellor of the University of Portsmouth from 2012 to 2021.

Sandi Toksvig first came to wider public prominence in 1994 when the charity Save the Children dropped her services as compere of its 75th anniversary celebrations after she came out. Toksvig then took the brave step and chose to publicly identify as a lesbian. Having three young children at the time motivated her to come out so that they would not grow up feeling ashamed of having two mothers. She later went on to partner with psychotherapist Debbie Toksvig and legally convert their civil partnership into a marriage in December 2014. Toksvig is an active supporter of LGBT rights, campaigning against the Church of England’s reluctance to accept same-sex marriage in 2023, and an advocate of LGBTQ+ youth mental health support. She is an inspiration to many in the LGBT community as she has made it possible for others to come out with confidence and pursue their dreams regardless of their sexuality.
